How to Use a Handheld Dog Repeller
Distance, direction, how long to press, how to behave, batteries and charging, your own pet — and which model suits you.

Even the best handheld dog repeller ends up in a drawer marked “didn't work” if it's used the wrong way. A few rules make the difference.
Distance
Handheld deterrents are short-range tools. The SONIK TP-10 is most effective at 5–7 metres and reaches up to 10 metres in suitable conditions; the MAXON TP-20 is effective up to 15 metres. Pressing when the dog is far away wastes battery; waiting until it is right next to you wastes time.
Direction
The sound travels in a straight line. Point the front of the device at the dog and make sure your hand or pocket isn't covering the output.
How long to press
Hold the button while the dog approaches and release it once the dog stops or backs off. Constant, unnecessary use can make dogs on the same route get used to the sound.
How to behave
Don't run and don't walk towards the dog while using the device. Stop, aim and move away slowly.
Batteries and charging
The SONIK TP-10 runs on a 9V battery; if the low-battery light comes on, replace the battery before your next trip. The MAXON TP-20 charges over USB; for daily use, charge it in the evening.
Your own pet
The device doesn't tell animals apart. Don't point the output at your own dog while you're walking it.
Which one should I choose?
For occasional walks, the SONIK TP-10; for daily cycling, running or outdoor work, the rechargeable MAXON TP-20; to protect a fixed spot such as a shop entrance or doorway, the plug-in TP-150.
