How to Choose an Ultrasonic Pest Repeller
1. Does it sweep, or does it hold one tone?
Start here. This one specification predicts more about long-term performance than everything else combined.
Animals habituate to unchanging stimuli. A device emitting a fixed frequency becomes filtered background noise within days — which is precisely why so many buyers report that a repeller "worked for a week". It did. Then the animal's nervous system stopped registering it.
What to look for: a stated frequency range (for example 25–40 kHz) plus explicit language about sweeping, scanning or variable frequency.
Red flag: a single number, or no frequency information at all. If a manufacturer won't tell you the range, there's usually a reason.
2. Is the coverage figure honest?
Coverage is where this category does most of its lying, and the lie is always the same shape: a large square-metre figure that assumes a single open room with nothing in it.
Ultrasound doesn't pass through walls or closed doors, and is heavily absorbed by soft furnishings. So a genuine coverage figure describes one enclosed space in line of sight, not a building.
What to look for: a per-room figure, and a manufacturer who says openly that multiple rooms need multiple devices.
Red flag: "covers your whole home" on a single plug-in unit. It's physically not possible, and a brand willing to claim it will be willing to claim other things.
Field note
Sensible indoor benchmarks: around 150–200 m² of line-of-sight space for a mid-range domestic unit; up to roughly 400 m² for a high-output multi-channel unit in an open-plan space. Anything dramatically above that on a plug-in device is marketing arithmetic.
3. How many output channels does it have?
A single emitter radiates in a cone. In a square room facing open floor, one is fine. In an L-shaped room, an open-plan kitchen-diner, or a space with an island or partition, the angles the cone can't reach are simply unprotected.
Multi-channel devices distribute output across several emitters at different angles, covering irregular spaces far more completely. This is the main practical difference between an entry-level unit and a large-area one — a 12-channel device isn't just louder than a 5-channel one, it sees more of the room.
4. Is it built for where it's actually going?
Indoor and outdoor are different products, and using one for the other is a common expensive mistake.
Indoor: plug-in form factor, low socket height, no weather rating needed. Check that it's discreet enough that you'll actually leave it plugged in — a device that looks like industrial equipment in a living room tends to get unplugged when guests arrive.
Outdoor: a real IP rating (IP65 or better for open ground), a stated operating temperature range, and a power strategy that survives winter. Solar-only units in northern latitudes underperform badly from November to February — hybrid units that accept mains or adapter charging when daylight is short are far more reliable year-round.
Burrowing animals: if moles, voles or gophers are the problem, airborne ultrasound is the wrong technology entirely. You need ground-transmitted vibration. Some outdoor systems do both.
5. What does the housing tell you?
Material is a legitimate proxy for engineering intent.
Thin injection-moulded plastic with a decorative grille that isn't an emitter is the signature of a device designed to look like a product rather than function as one. Powder-coated steel, real weight in the hand, a sealed gasket on an outdoor unit, and visible emitters that correspond to the stated channel count all indicate a device built to a specification rather than a price.
Weight is a surprisingly good tell. A serious outdoor unit is heavy because it contains a motor, a battery and a sealed enclosure. There's no way to fake that.
6. What's the warranty — and what won't they claim?
In a category where independent evidence is genuinely mixed, warranty length is the most reliable quality signal available to a buyer. The logic is straightforward: a guarantee is expensive to honour on a product that doesn't perform. A manufacturer offering three years on a device they expected to be returned would be making a costly mistake.
Look for both of these together:
- A meaningful trial period — 30 days minimum, and check the practical terms as well as the length. "Free returns, no questions asked" removes the friction that actually stops people; a 60-day window with a complicated claims process doesn't.
- A multi-year warranty with a realistic stated service life.
Then read what the manufacturer refuses to claim. A brand that tells you their device won't work through walls, won't help if you keep hamsters, and needs four weeks before you judge it has given you information you can verify. A brand claiming 100% elimination in 48 hours has only demonstrated a willingness to say so.
7. Are the expectations set honestly before you buy?
The best predictor of satisfaction in this category isn't the device — it's whether the seller told you the truth about the first fortnight.
Activity commonly increases in weeks one and two as animals are disturbed from established nesting sites. A brand that hides this collects returns on day ten from customers who assumed it made things worse. A brand that publishes it up front has customers who recognise the signal and keep going.
Their presence tells you the company expects you to still be a customer in year three.

Matching the device to the space
Once you've filtered on the above, sizing is simple — count enclosed spaces, not square metres.
A flat or a single problem room: one mid-range indoor unit, placed in line of sight at low socket height.
A family home: one unit per space you care about. Kitchen and living area first, then bedrooms, then the loft or garage. The garage is the most under-protected room in most houses and the cheapest to protect preventively.
An open-plan or large room: a high-output multi-channel unit rather than two small ones — better angular coverage from a single position.
Garden, smallholding or land: a weather-rated outdoor system with both ground vibration and airborne ultrasonic output, hybrid-powered so winter daylight isn't a limitation.
Warehouse, workshop or food premises: a heavy-duty industrial unit. The relevant question shifts from comfort to continuity — what an infestation costs in stock loss, contamination or a failed inspection, against a device that runs for a decade.
