Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Actually Work?

We have been designing ultrasonic repellent systems since 2004. That gives us a commercial reason to tell you these devices are miraculous. We're not going to, because the moment we overstate what physics allows, we lose the only thing that matters in this category: your trust.

So this article is written the way we would explain it to an engineer friend.

The short answer

Ultrasonic repellers change animal behaviour in the space the sound actually reaches. They do not exterminate, they do not travel through walls, and they do not fix a structural entry problem on their own.

Used correctly — right room, clear line of sight, a device sized to the space, running continuously — they make an area unpleasant enough that rodents and many insects stop treating it as safe territory. Used incorrectly — one small unit hidden behind a sofa, expected to cover a whole house — they do nothing, and the buyer concludes the technology is fake.

Most of the "it doesn't work" experience in this category is a placement and expectation problem, not a physics problem. But some of it is genuinely the technology's limit, and you deserve to know which is which.

What the research actually says

Independent scientific work on this category is genuinely mixed, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

In laboratory conditions, researchers have repeatedly shown that ultrasound in the 20–65 kHz range provokes measurable avoidance, stress and disrupted feeding or mating behaviour in rodents and several insect species. That effect is real and reproducible.

In real homes, results are far less consistent. Studies of consumer devices are sparse, frequently lack proper control groups, and the field conditions vary enormously — room shape, furniture, wall material, the size of the infestation, whether food sources were also removed. When an infestation drops during a trial, it's often impossible to prove the device caused it.

Regulators have been sceptical for good reason. The US Federal Trade Commission has issued warning letters to manufacturers and retailers of ultrasonic pest-control devices over unsupported efficacy claims, and has brought enforcement actions where marketers couldn't substantiate what they promised. That history exists because the category earned it.

Engineering note

Our position: the honest claim is behavioural deterrence within acoustic reach, and the honest supporting evidence is the laboratory work plus consistent field feedback — not a fabricated "99.8% elimination" figure.

Some things are more valuable when you can't see them. Clean air. Silence. Peace of mind. We would rather lose a sale to honesty than win one with a number we can't defend.

Four reasons ultrasonic repellers fail in real homes

If you've tried one of these devices and got nothing, one of these four things is almost certainly why.

1. The sound never reached the pest

This is the big one, and it's the reason most cheap devices disappoint. Ultrasound behaves like light, not like bass. It travels in straight lines, reflects off hard surfaces and is absorbed or blocked by soft ones. A sofa, a curtain, a stack of boxes, a closed cupboard door — each one casts an acoustic shadow.

2. The frequency never changed

Animals habituate. A device that emits one fixed tone becomes background noise within days — the same way you stop hearing your fridge. This is the single biggest technical difference between a €15 device and an engineered one.

Devices that sweep across a frequency band, changing pitch continuously and unpredictably, deny the nervous system a stable pattern to adapt to. If a product spec sheet doesn't tell you the frequency range and whether it sweeps, assume it doesn't.

3. It was switched off, or moved, too early

Deterrence is a habit-breaking process, not an event. Rodents have established routes, nesting sites and scent trails; a few uncomfortable nights doesn't erase months of territorial mapping. Devices that get unplugged after ten days never had a chance.

4. It was the only thing that changed

No repeller outcompetes an open bag of dog food or a 12 mm gap under a garage door. Electronic deterrence raises the cost of staying; it doesn't remove the reason for coming. Sealing entry points and removing food access does more of the work than most people expect — and the two together do far more than either alone.

What a realistic timeline looks like

We publish this on every product page, because managing expectation honestly is the cheapest way to prevent a disappointed customer.

Week 1–2
Activity may increase

This surprises people and it's the most common reason for early returns. Animals disturbed in nesting sites move around more, and you see and hear them more, not less. It is evidence the device is doing something.

Week 3
Evacuation begins

Sightings drop. Night-time noise in ceilings and cavities reduces noticeably.

Week 4+
Steady state

The area has been dropped from the animals' routine. Protection lasts as long as the device runs.

Anyone promising you results in 48 hours is describing their marketing plan, not the animal's behaviour.

Where ultrasonic genuinely outperforms the alternatives

We're honest about the limits, so let us be equally direct about the strengths.

  • No chemicals in living space. No residue on a floor a baby crawls on, no vapour in a kitchen, no exposure risk for a dog or cat that licks a surface. For households with young children or pets, that isn't a nice-to-have.
  • Nothing dies in your walls. No traps to empty, no carcass decomposing somewhere inaccessible, no secondary poisoning of the owl or cat that eats a poisoned rodent.
  • It's continuous. A quarterly spray treatment protects you for a fraction of the quarter. A device that runs 24/7 is working at 3 a.m. in February.
  • It's preventive. The most valuable use of an ultrasonic device isn't ending an infestation — it's making a space unattractive before one begins. That's the case for putting a unit in a garage, storeroom or holiday home you've never had a problem in.

What we will not claim

  • We will not tell you a single device protects a whole house. Physics forbids it. Room-based coverage is the honest recommendation.
  • We will not tell you it works through concrete.
  • We will not publish an elimination percentage we cannot substantiate.
  • We will not tell you it replaces sealing entry points. It doesn't.
  • We will not tell you it's suitable for every household — if you keep hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs or pet rats, an ultrasonic rodent repeller is the wrong product for you. Cats, dogs, birds and fish are unaffected.

So — should you buy one?

Buy one if: you want a chemical-free layer of protection in a specific room, you're willing to run it continuously for at least a month, you'll place it in open line of sight, and you'll pair it with basic exclusion and food hygiene.

Don't buy one if: you're expecting one plug-in device to clear a whole building, you want results this weekend, or you need to solve an active structural infestation without also sealing the entry points.
